Surveys

Another way i collected information was by creating a survey, then sharing it on Facebook and asked my peers and their peers to complete the survey.

To create the survey i used the website, https://www.surveymonkey.com, and i used different type of questions, to get a wider type of answers, by asking open questions where they can elaborate their answers, then i used closed questions for a more general answer which doesn't need any explanation.

Overall 18 people answered the survey and no questions were skipped.

The Purpose

The purpose of all my research is related to my topic, previously stated in my first post, anorexia, and i will present all this research that i have collected into a report. This report and all the research is going towards my awareness campaign for the subject anorexia, which is mainly aimed at young adults, so this is what i focused my research on in order to create the report to aim at my target audience.

How To Spot A Good Source

In order to spot a good source it must include:

Purpose - There must be a reason for this source, either to sell something, persuade someone or argue an opinion.

Reliability - Is it from somewhere that you can depend on, such as the BBC or a website that you can rely on giving you the truth?

Currency - The source is more reliable, the more recent the date is of the source, rather than 200 years old.

Authority - Is the person that wrote the text, reliable and trustworthy, as are they a professional in the matter or not?

Types of Research and Sources

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research is where peoples opinions are took and produced into hard facts and statistics, and the larger the amount of people asked, the more the reliable the results are. Ways to receive quantitative are surveys, numeric such as likes on Facebook etc.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research includes people's thoughts and opinions, and these are received through focus groups and interviews and this helps to shape a general overview for different people. This also includes observing situations and websites.

Primary Sources

Primary sources are where you carry out present research yourself, such as recording an event, carrying out your own survey, or taking part in a internet forum.

Secondary Sources

Secondary sources are where primary sources are taken and analysed  and these can be received from text books, magazines, documentaries, any type of information that you have taken from someone else.

Since a focus group was one way I can gather information about my topic, Anorexia, I presented my own, with 5 participants between the age of 16-17, and here is the information I have gathered, hope you find this useful in anyway.

Topic: Anorexia

What do you think people suffer from Anorexia?

I found that everyone said "because people want to be skinny" and that a skinny body is branded the perfect body image to have, due to celebrities and models and how they are perceived as perfect, with the body full of no "imperfections." Also they found that there is no escaping it and it can be found anywhere mainly because of the increase of social media and there are too many ways to see images and stories brainwashing people to be this specific way.

Do you know any stories of people with eating disorders and how does that make you feel?

Most people in the group knew someone who had or still is suffering from an eating disorder and how it affected their life dramatically, not in the way they hoped it had, and achieves the complete opposite, creating more problems than what you were trying to escape. Then it all suddenly becomes an addiction.

Why do you think people suffer from eating disorders?

All of the participants said that they thought it was mostly down to peer and pressure off others close to them, and maybe not even people who know them, and how that isn't only a physical disorder but mentally too and once your mind starts seeing other images to what you really are, perceiving yourself differently, or worse, then it may cause you to try and change things in the wrong way.

Do you think there is enough help?

The participants in the focus group said that they didn't think there was enough help as there really isn't any publicity or enough to prevent people from developing this illness. One person said that she thought there should be more help towards younger people, like more information on the subject in schools and colleges, as they are more alert to the social media and are more influenced by it.

thank you for reading, post later :)

Focus Groups

What is a Focus Group?

A focus group is a group of people that participate in discussions about a particular subject or product, where people provide their feedback and their opinions on the topic, giving the leader of the group qualitative information to help with their research.

How many people are usually involved?

5-10 people

Why is it different to a survey?

It is different as it is more of a discussion where people make conversations from questions asked.

Why use focus groups?
  • To get people's opinions
  • Different points of view
  • Lots of detail
  • Subjects can be elaborated
  • More understanding
  • People feel more comfortable with other people.
However, a focus group may get too personal for someone's liking and then the focus group wont be successful, and people may have disagreements that get out of hand, so try and keep it professional and not too personal.

Introduction to Media Research

Hello, my name is Katie but for short kt, and this blog is to publish my Media research, and explain how I gathered the research about my certain topic that will help me benefit further in my course, and even my career. Hope you enjoy!

My chosen subject, is related to the topic of one of my articles out of my fashion magazine, this subject is Anorexia, and I know that this subject isn't very cheerful but its very serious and is a larger subject then people know and that shouldn't be the case. Many people suffer from this illness and don't have the correct help or even attention, and I think that this subject should have more awareness as too many people are suffering from this illness.
